Semi Finals – Division 1 Girls fight hard.

8 Sep 2014 by Brett Forrest

The Division 1 Warrior Women’s Team finished the 2014 minor round with a very respectable 7 wins and 1 draw earning them an opportunity to play in the finals series. Woodville finished the minor round in 4th place, this saw them have to come up against Brighton in the knockout semi-final. Last time these two teams met Brighton beat Woodville by 19 goals. This was going to be a very tough test for Woodville to come back from a 19 goal lost. Woodville played very well despite losing 19 – 9. This was a big turn around from the 19 goal loss two weeks earlier.

Before the game started there were two big blows to the team line-up. Two of Woodville’s Superstar attackers and goal scorers, Colleen and Jasmyn failed a fitness test and were ruled out of the big game in September.

Game Highlights

Despite Brighton getting out to a 12 – 2 lead at half time, the Woodville girls stuck together and actually drew the last half 7 all. Woodville actually won the last quarter 4 – 3.

Sarah Adams – What an awesome player. She keep the game alive with he saves. If someone had of taken stats on her saves she would have had heaps. What more can you say about this girl. #TrueChampion, #Legend, #BornLeader, #NoFear, #TeamPlayer, #SuperStar, #LeagueNextYear, #ForgotTheCoachesFrozenCokeThisWeek

Bianca & Chloe again work unbelievably well together in the centre. Possible the best duo in the whole lacrosse completion. These two girls need to push themselves into the league team.

Despite 4 underserved trips to the penalty bench Bianca kept her head in the game and continied to lead the girls from the front, inspiring every single warrior along the way. This girl has a never give up attitude.

Merlindie comes alive and scores 4 goals in the last half of the game.

Interview with Brett After Game

Brett had nothing but praise for his team and Warrior Girls. Some of his comments include:

Awesome bunch of girls to coach. The girls all got along with each other very well and made every player feel welcome to the team. In the season we had over 30 different girls play in Div 1, this is awesome.

The girls were all so easy to coach, every play was willing to listen and learn. I hope over the season I was able to help each player learn and take something out of the season from me.

Brett would like to see all the girls stick together and ensure they all get out to pre-season. Bianca, Chloe, Sarah, Amber, Jasmyn, Janie, Georgia, Jackie and Hailey should all look at pushing their way into the league team for 2015. Each and everyone of them have the talent to do so.

Very glad Colleen had a bet with Hailey and followed through with her bet and played with her daughter. It was great having you in the team.

Thanks to Rachael (with a A) for stepping up and playing goalie when needed this year. She has no fear and showed it in goals. Also scored one of the best shovel shots ive seen. This lady even gave up watching her daughter play her first league game to play goals for the team, much appreciated by the team.

Thanks to Jessie and Molly, two very reliable juniors that turned up every week and always keen to get on the field and help out. Hope we see you both out there next year.

Can’t say enough about Sarah Adams, no matter what is dished out she finds a positive side and always inspires the team.

Bianca Parker has the biggest heart you have ever seen, Bianca finds a way to involve every player on the field. She never gives up and gives 100% every single week. Thanks for the season Bianca.

This year I saw a number of players improve dramatically throughout the season. Chloe Scott started off slow but she found some confidence and there was no stopping this champion. At one stage Chloe was averaging 6 goals agame. Amber became a very important part of the team find confidence through out the year and fitting in very well as a Warrior, also playing her first League game. Jasmyn a true born leader and future superstar of Woodville, Jasmyn also got to play her first League game this year. Hailey Jones wasn’t too sure at the start of the season about playing seniors but after her first game she was hooked and a integral part of the team. Hailey is a very skillfull player and has a great career of lacrosse infront of her. Hailey also scored a great goal to get her mum into playing.

Chelsea Pistor came to the club this year wanting a transfer. Chelsea made it out to preseason and also worked very hard with Megan to improve her fitness. Chelsea was very willing to learn, and sort feedback from everyone. I was very happy with how much Chelsea improved from when she first joined us in January.

Maddie joined us part way though the season having never played lacrosse. Maddie did very very well in what she has learnt in half of a season. Maddie played some very tough games in the defence and had to learn very quickly. I hope you enjoyed it Maddie.

Merlindie hasn’t lost it despite missing a large part of the season.

Torii from her first game this year to her last was a massive turn around. Torii last few games in defence were outstanding with interceptions and clearing the ball.

To our mighty Captains. Leah and Hannah are awesome. The team would not be the same with out both of you. In two years you have both come so far. I hope you both continue on for years to come.

Big thanks to my best Mate Youngy for all your help this year.

It was a sad day on Saturday know it would be the last time I coach the Div 1 girls. It has come time for me to retire from coaching. Don’t worry Ill still be out on sunny days watching you all. Im going to miss training and games, always so much fun being out there with the Div 1 girls. This year is going to be so tough just picking 3 trophy winners.
